Hi all,
Yesterday (Tuesday) in the afternoon we were in Gainsville, Florida, again to let the surgeon look at his handiwork. He pronounced it "superb" and removed all the steri-strips (special bandage strips that took the place of stitches). The leg brace has been adjusted to allow an additional 15 degrees of movement in my knee (15-60 degrees now). I can now put my full weight on that leg to start rehabilitating it. In 2-3 weeks I should be completely out of the brace and can start walking without crutches. I will start physical therapy in early March, 3 times a week for 2 months. And I don't need to see the doctor again until the end of the physical therapy treatments (mid to late April) when he expects to pronounce me "cured."
We'll continue staying with friends until I can be completely free of the leg brace and crutches, as getting on and off the boat is too difficult. It'll still be too difficult, even without the leg brace and crutches, at our current dock in Ft. Lauderdale to get off and on. So we'll be moving the boat in a week or so to another dock that will make getting on and off possible the day I can throw the leg brace away.
Thanks again to all of you for all your prayers, warm fuzzies and good intentions. The good doctor's comments show that you're getting your job done!
Fair winds,
Capt. Edmund "Bear" Downing
P.S. I've revised my "To" list a bit, and moved everyone over to "Blind Copy." Putting everyone's email address in the "To" spot means that you get a bunch of unnecessary names and addresses in the message. Putting everyone's name in the "Blind Copy" spot means that you only see your own name and email address. So this approach cleans up the message somewhat.
