Hi all,
I have been discharged from the motel room and its lovely view of a brick wall. That happened because the doctor no longer required the use of the leg brace except while using the crutches -- which meant that a 5-6 hour ride in the car to return to our usual neck of the woods was practical.
We're still not back on the boat. Getting on and off while being confined to the leg brace and using crutches is a definite no-no. We'll have to wait until the doctors are satisfied that the surgery site has healed; that's when they've said they will give the green light for starting physical therapy and learning how to walk again without crutches, and that's the point when we can consider moving back aboard.
So for now, we're staying with friends in Boca Raton, about 20 miles north of Ft. Lauderdale. We still have an appointment in Gainsville with the doctors on February 18 when we fully expect to get the green light.
By the end of March we expect that I'll be back to about 99% of my former self, that last 1% being the permanent loss of sensation in part of my lower left leg and foot.
Thanks again to all of you for all your prayers, warm fuzzies and good intentions. It has had a direct effect. At my last appointment in Gainsville the doctors said that of all the surgeries they have done similar to mine, my healing is definitely in the top ten. You're getting your job done exceptionally!
Fair winds,
Capt. Edmund "Bear" Downing
